Engage with local scientists as they discuss their latest research and discoveries in a friendly, inviting environment. These lectures address hot topics on the first Monday of every month, in the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. Stay for a special noon documentary showing.

The Sharp Minds lecture is free with general admission or a Senior Monday ticket.

Can Biology Solve the Plastic Pollution Problem?
Dec 2 at 10:30–11:30am

This talk explores the use of biological systems to break down harmful plastics that are rarely recycled. Our solution, “Engineered Living Materials,” embeds harmless bacteria into plastics. These bacteria stay dormant until the plastic is discarded in moist environments like soil. Then, they “wake up” and start eating the plastic, breaking it down naturally. This method not only helps the environment but also improves the plastic’s properties, making it last longer. By harnessing nature, we aim to turn plastic waste into harmless substances.
